ARE YOU USING YOUR HEAD WHILE RIDING?

Use your head while riding...don't risk it!

Thanks to two young cycling friends of JSCC - Elizabeth and Patricia, here is a great resource to read about the affects of riding without a helmet..

Shore Cycle Club....

The Shore Cycle Club is a non-profit organization devoted to promoting bicycling for fun, fitness and friendship throughout the Southern Shore Counties of New Jersey. The club was founded in 1973 in Ocean City, NJ with its original members participating in bicycling races around the Ocean City area. After 10 years, the club evolved from a racing club to a full cycling club including racing, touring and recreational riding. After over 35 years, the club has grown to over 150 members that include road cyclists, mountain bikers, racers, tri-athletes and general fitness enthusiasts, all with varying degrees of bicycling ability.

Although most of our members live in the tri-county area, some members live in the neighboring counties to the north and west in New Jersey as well as in Pennsylvania, Delaware and other states. Most of our rides and activities are based in the South Jersey shore area and the surrounding Pinelands forest areas.

The club is now a forum in which to meet fellow cyclists who share your interest and ability in bicycling, no matter what level of expertise and ability. For the most part, it is the general membership that organizes the rides and notifies our "rides coordinator" to get the word out to the membership so that all club members can participate and enjoy. While "the club", itself, sponsors a few regular "pre-set" rides, many more cycling outings are offered by the individual membership as they choose. During the warmer months, most members prefer to ride on paved roads (road rides), while in the winter months the members shift gear and prefer the off-road rides through the wooded dirt trails on fat-tire, ATB or mountain bikes.

Shore Cycle Club sponsors two annual fund-raising rides. The first ride is the Jerry Hanclich Pinelands Triple Loop which is ran out of the Batsto Village Park in Washington Township, Burlington County on during the month of May. This ride features three distinct loops varying in distance from 28 to 40 miles. Riding all three loops will allow you to ride a full century (100 miles).

The second ride is our Belleplain Fall Century which is ran out of Belleplain State Forest just outside of Woodbine in Cape May County in late September / early October. This ride will feature multiple loops and varying distances to accommodate both the novice and experienced cyclist, so you can tailor your ride up to a full century (100 miles). During the year, the club will advertise these rides on its web site, in its newsletter and distribute flyers in bicycle shops, fitness centers and other community-minded businesses within our tri-county area.

The club also has two social events during the year, the Summer Picnic (usually held in August) and Holiday Party (usually held in early December). Both functions are open to all club members and are also publicized through the web site and club newsletter.

Shore Cycle Club welcomes new members of all cycling abilities to join any time of the year. Go to the club membership page to find out how to join us and participate in all the fun.
